5 Laundry Habits That Are Secretly Ruining Your Clothes
Share
If you work out regularly, your laundry routine matters more than you think. Sweaty workout clothes and damp towels trapped in a closed gym bag create the perfect environment for odor to build up — and some common laundry habits make it worse. Here's what to watch out for.
1. Overloading the Washing Machine
Stuffing too much in at once prevents clothes from getting properly clean, especially sweaty activewear. Wash workout gear in smaller loads so detergent and water can actually reach the fabric fibers where odor builds up.
2. Using Too Much Detergent
More soap doesn't mean cleaner clothes. Excess detergent leaves residue in fabric fibers — especially in synthetic activewear — that traps odor over time. Use the recommended amount, or even slightly less for athletic gear.
3. Ignoring Care Labels on Activewear
Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon — common in workout clothes — can be damaged by high heat or harsh cycles. Always check the care label before washing athletic gear.
4. Leaving Workout Clothes in the Washer Too Long
Forgetting a load of sweaty gym clothes in the washer leads to mildew and musty odors that are hard to remove. Transfer workout clothes to dry as soon as the cycle ends — ideally within 30 minutes.
5. Stuffing Sweaty Clothes Back Into Your Gym Bag
This one is the biggest offender. Sealing damp, sweaty workout clothes into a closed gym bag after a session creates an odor environment that builds up workout after workout. At a minimum, air out your bag and remove damp gear immediately after the gym.
Between Laundry Days
Even with the best laundry habits, odor can build up in your gym bag between washes. FoldFresh Freshness Sheets are designed to help fight unwanted odor in enclosed gym bags between workouts and washes — a simple post-workout step that takes seconds. Results may vary. FoldFresh is not a substitute for regular laundering.
